India is a nation of diverse ethnicities, religions, and
languages, which has produced a myriad of unique cultural forms - both
historically and in the present day. Pop culture in the subcontinent has
been flavored not only by ideas from indigenous groups, but by concepts
and cultural forms borrowed from colonial powers, the United States, and
beyond. In the twentieth century, Indian pop culture has enjoyed increasing popularity abroad, with Bollywood films, Indian fusion music, and spicy curries and restaurant chains becoming increasingly ubiquitous in metropolitan areas throughout the globe. Indian pop culture is a blend of many different ideas, a tasty mix of native customs and foreign inventions. Rather than simply imitating Western styles, the Indian people have created a whole world of pop with transnational appeal while upholding their unique traditions. |
